I was bombarded by thoughts about the auction last night when I was trying to go to sleep, and when I woke up this morning, still able to remember them, they seemed like pretty good ideas, so I thought I'd share.
What if, rather than making the auction an event confined to a couple of hours, we had it running all weekend, but in an ebay sort of way. People can come in to where all the auction stuff is set up and laid out, look around all the stuff they can place bids for, then go and talk to a volunteer and place bids on various items, then go away to an event or panel, and check back again later, see if someone else made a bid, and up their own bid if they want to.
This way, they know all the stuff they can bid for, so they aren't holding out, and they don't have to worry about having spent all their money at the traders hall, because it would be open from the beginning of the con, and they can look around the whole time - effectively putting the auction in competition with the traders, but hey, the traders can put stuff in the auction room as well.
It also means that, if people come on the first day, see stuff in the auction they want, and place bids, then they HAVE to come back the next day to see if they win the bidding.
I also wondered if there might be a raffle/door-prize or something, that people can buy tickets for as they come through registration.
I think I have run out of squee. I didn't know there was only a limited supply.
